With an unhurried pace, dramaland’s most current slice-of-life providing requires us on a journey with our heroine who is completed with the emptiness that characterizes her mundane life in the city, and seeks to fill the void in the solace and leisure of the countryside.
EPISODES 1-two WEECAP
Blaring alarms that rudely indicate the start off of a new day, the push and shove linked with operating to catch the train, darting out of meetings for coffee errands and obtaining all the doors slammed in her face. These are the hallmarks of the rat race that is our major lady LEE YEO-REUM’s (Seolhyun) life. Regardless of becoming excellent at her job, Yeo-reum is the doormat at perform, and her boyfriend of six years also breaks up with her for the reason that he finds her passive and exhausting.
Though they reside in unique cities, Yeo-reum’s one particular ray of sunlight is her mom, and her globe shatters when her mom all of a sudden dies. Yeo-reum goes by means of the funeral in a daze and ultimately breaks down when the packed side dishes Mom sent arrives just just after the funeral. But in the finish, nothing at all alterations. Yeo-reum nevertheless lives like a robot going by means of the motions each at perform and at dwelling.
The train leaves Yeo-reum behind one particular morning, and as she requires a resigned appear about, she notices it is spring. Like the petals from the trees, the scales fall from her eyes, and when the subsequent train arrives, her feet falter. “I’m not going to perform,” she says, in a sudden burst of determination. And just like that, the heaviness from the pressures of perform and life in common are lifted from her shoulders. For the 1st time in forever she wears a relaxed smile.
Yeo-reum decides to do nothing at all from right here on out, so she quits her job, fits her essentials into a backpack, and it is goodbye to Seoul. She heads straight to the countryside to run with the sand beneath her feet and wade neck-deep into the water. “I’m going on a strike against this point known as life!” She declares, exchanging the bleakness of her old life for a new adventure right here.
Up subsequent just after the beach is the nearby library exactly where Yeo-reum meets librarian AHN DAE-BEOM (Im Si-wan) for the 1st time. As opposed to Yeo-reum back in Seoul, Dae-beom’s alarm wakes him up to attractive mornings that start off off with a jogging session, and continues with flipping by means of the pages of a book. It is very the leisurely life, but then, that is the common pace which accompanies most people today living in modest towns.
We do not get to find out a lot about Dae-beom however, but from the small we see, he’s very shy about strangers. Seriously, he relies on written notes in the unavoidable circumstance when he has to communicate with strangers as he can not even speak to them. But he’s a caring fella, and will go out of his way for them when the occasion arises. So far, Dae-beom has the most interaction — just a handful of sentences, genuinely — with his fellow librarian JO JI-YOUNG (Park Ye-young) who ironically, can not wait to be transferred to Seoul.
I had a chuckle when Yeo-reum mistakenly went “Excuse me, unnie,” to Dae-beom — and I get it, for the reason that aside from wearing his hair out, the dude has soft characteristics. But Yeo-reum quickly gets her karma when some children address her as ahjumma, and it is the start off of her misadventures in the town — from having pegged as a shoplifter, to the usual woes that come with obtaining a excellent location to rent.
As a final resort, she is introduced to a rundown billiard hall in a semi-abandoned developing. It is a a lot bigger space than her tiny apartment in Seoul, and Yeo-reum is sold. So what if an individual died in the location? She gets the complete developing to herself at just $600 for the complete year in exchange for fixing up the location, and that is a fairly excellent deal! Heh.
Whilst the landlord is okay with renting out the space, his slightly annoying son — and the retailer owner who accused Yeo-reum of shoplifting — BAE SUNG-MIN (Kwak Min-gyu) desires to sell the developing. He’s not at all pleased that Yeo-reum is moving in, but who cares? Nonetheless messy the location is, “I have a dwelling now,” Yeo-reum says with a smile. And the subsequent morning, she’s only as well pleased to ultimately delete that rude 5AM alarm from her telephone. Phew!
It is practically like a declaration that her time is now completely hers. And with no workplace to rush to, Yeo-reum proceeds to drink herself senseless. Fortunately, Dae-beom is there to save her from the clutches of an oncoming truck, as her drunken self wanders the streets. He requires her back to the library exactly where she proves to be a heavy sleeper, and nothing at all he does can wake her up. Seriously, he tries every thing! Except touching her, of course. Lol.
With a handful of minutes left in our opening week, I’m starting to unwind and type my conclusions on what to count on from the show. But when Yeo-reum rushes off in embarrassment the subsequent morning and arrives dwelling, we see a smoking man watching her from the opposite developing and he completely provides off creepy vibes…
Now I’m guessing it is possibly not a coincidence that an individual just so occurred to have died in her billiard-hall-turned-residence. Sigh. What is the genre of this drama once again? I came right here for the guarantee of a comforting slice of life drama, and I’m not in the market place for sleuthing and murder mysteries at the moment. So if the show can preserve the thriller aspect to the barest minimum, I’d be most grateful for it.
Asides the stalking creep, the drama commonly evokes a sense of catharsis in me, and I consider I’m ultimately having the idea of what a “healing drama” is. I’m drawn to Yeo-reum — it is practically like I’m living by means of life with her. And it is not only for the reason that we’re viewing the drama by means of her lense, she’s just that relatable — despite the fact that I’m nowhere close to quitting every thing in my life to move to a semi-remote location.
Yeo-reum is braver than I am in that aspect, and I admire her capability to just up and go 180° on her life devoid of a lot of a program. Dirt low cost rent aside, going on to reside in a residence exactly where an individual died devoid of raising additional inquiries is an additional type of bravery. I imply, I’d have at least been curious adequate to ask. But not Yeo-reum. Refusing to cower one particular final time to her douchebag of a perform sunbae and exposing his corrupt and perverse methods? Brave, once again. When Yeo-reum says she’s completed, she is completed!
Whilst it is unfortunate that Mom died, her death was the starting of Yeo-reum’s retrospection. Mom was a tough worker, and she died devoid of having a day off to rest. Yeo-reum has selected to reside differently from her mom — exiting the rat race and moving to uncover the answer on how to reside her life from now on.
Will she uncover the answer she seeks? Possibly, or not. Issues do not magically disappear in a modest town. But for now, it is adequate to reside every single day at a time performing what she desires to do: definitely nothing at all — aside from reading and going drinking for the duration of the day devoid of obtaining to care about what other people today consider, for the reason that, why not? It is the spring season, Yeo-reum is blooming anew, and I’m right here for it.
