If You Want Upon Me: Episodes 1-two
Ji Chang-wook is back in a beautiful healing drama from KBS about a lost ex-convict who joins a group of hospice workers that grants final wishes to dying sufferers. I appreciate a superior healing drama, and the premiere week gave me just what I was hoping for. It is got a warm, slice-of-life vibe and a robust cast of characters at its core. I’m currently seeking forward to the identified household bonding and touching human stories in the coming weeks.
EPISODES 1-two WEECAP
Provided Ji Chang-wook’s current drama history, I was a small trepidatious for this premiere in spite of loving the premise. Fortunately, this a single is shaping up to be a keeper. Healing dramas are good when carried out nicely, and I feel a lot depends on the vibe and not overdoing the sentimentally. If You Want Upon Me gave me the proper quantity of likable and empathetic characters, human stories, and warmth. It created me want to grab a cup of tea and stare at the sunset.
We’re initial introduced to YOON GYEO-RE (Ji Chang-wook) as he’s released from prison. He’s got tats and scars and his eyes inform you he’s observed issues. Regardless of his hard exterior, it promptly becomes apparent that he’s a softie underneath.
Life has hardened Gyeo-re and taught him to rely on no a single but himself. Gyeo-re ran away from his abusive father as a kid and took himself to an orphanage exactly where he spent the remainder of his childhood. He comes across as a loner, but he does have at least a single trustworthy pal from the orphanage, veterinarian JIN-GU (Park Se-joon).
But Gyeo-re’s accurate bestie is his small dog Son who he rescued and is now regrettably terminally ill. Yes, Gyeo-re named his dog “son,” and it is adorable. Even though Gyeo-re pretends to care about absolutely nothing, he dotes endlessly on his dog, carrying him with him everywhere and belting his small carrier into the auto seat.
Subsequent up is Group Genie, our group of committed hospice workers and volunteers who perform to grant final wishes to dying sufferers. Maybe the most central member is volunteer KANG TAE-SHIK (Sung Dong-il) who now lives at Woori Hospice Care but utilised to reside on the streets. He seems to be the ringleader right here, while he’s not even employees.
And we can not overlook our top lady SEO YEON-JU (Sooyoung), a hospice nurse with a appreciate of working out. She’s sincere and simple with a temper, but she’s also recognized for becoming somewhat oblivious. Every person at the hospice knows Physician YANG (Shin Joo-hwan) has a crush on her, but she cluelessly laughs off the concept.
Not all the employees are fond of Group Genie, although. Their dedication to granting patients’ wishes usually leads to the bending of guidelines, placing everybody in a challenging position. Physician Yang had been assisting them, but he bows out due to the ethical conundrum it puts him in.
So then, how does our lovable ne’er-do-nicely finish up crossing paths with Group Genie? Gyeo-re causes a auto crash when attempting to outrun his gangster hyung JANG SEOK-JUN (Nam Tae-hoon). As quickly as Gyeo-re got out of prison, they came immediately after him for supposedly stealing income. Even though Gyeo-re claims he delivered the income as promised, the stacks of money at his disposal lead me to think the gangsters on this a single.
Back to the accident, Gyeo-re’s reckless driving leads Tae-shik to injure his foot and prevents him from driving. Determined to get his patient to his seaside hometown ahead of he passes, Tae-shik coopts Gyeo-re to drive their ambulance. He refuses at initial but then realizes it’ll aid him get away from Seok-jun, so off to the sea they go.
Even though Group Genie fulfills their patient’s want, Gyeo-re sits alone on the beach. With nowhere to go and no a single to miss him, Gyeo-re does not see a purpose to reside and walks into the ocean with Son. Tae-shik sees and pulls him back, utilizing the excuse that he should really take duty for inuring him in the crash.
In the course of all this, Tae-shik realizes he knows Gyeo-re. In a flashback, we see Tae-shik becoming strangled by Gyeo-re’s father. Tae-shik sees small Gyeo-re nearby, heavily bruised and with a noticeable burn scar. In present day, Tae-shik sees that identical scar. I’m currently seeking forward to the bonding among grumpy Gyeo-re, who secretly desires to be loved, and the empathetic Tae-shik.
Tae-shik requires benefit of Gyeo-re’s scenario and convinces the judge to have Gyeo-re full his neighborhood service hours at Woori Hospice Care. Gyeo-re does not precisely make a good impression on his initial day with his cavalier attitude, his tattoos, and his gangster suit. Oh, and the truth that he virtually bowls more than Yeon-ju and yet another employees member with his fancy sports auto on his way in.
Undesirable initial impressions aside, the employees nonetheless treat him nicely and attempt to include things like him, but Gyeo-re keeps his distance. He’s painfully unused to household-like settings and will not even join them for dinner, which he so clearly is desperate to do.
The hospice could have gotten much more than they bargained for with rough-about-the-edges Gyeo-re. He grumbles about all the things from the uncool auto he has to drive for Tae-shik to the meals to what ever else annoys him. But his soft spot for desperate folks and these in have to have quickly betrays him.
His initial mission with Group Genie is to aid a dying elderly man get permission to invest his final days in his beloved household property. The household at present living there are about to move considering that the wife lost a lot of their income in poor stock choices, but immediately after some convincing, they take Tae-shik up his present and keep elsewhere for a week.
Gyeo-re tries to hold up his hard guy facade, but can not cease the tears when the elderly dying man requires his hand and thanks him for assisting. He then spends all evening crafting persimmons to hang on the man’s preferred tree outdoors so he can see them in the morning. Needless to say, Yeon-ju softens toward him immediately after witnessing this and overhearing that he attempted to commit suicide.
Even though Gyeo-re pretends he’s decided to keep with the hospice due to the fact Son is comfy there, he’s clearly acquiring some a great deal necessary warmth from Group Genie himself. When he returns to the hospice to get some of the elderly man’s issues, he spots a mysteriously locked door. We finish with Tae-shik ominously telling him to keep out of that area.
I truly enjoyed the initial two episodes and liked the balance among the overarching story and the person stories of the sufferers becoming granted their final want. Even though we have our principal characters, it is much more of an ensemble drama which is good. The cast was a draw for me, and they didn’t disappoint.
I’m seeking forward to watching Tae-shik take the endearingly grumpy but harmless Gyeo-re below his wing. I’m curious about Tae-shik’s history with Gyeo-re’s father. Was the father a loan shark or enforcer of some type? Tae-shik’s homeless close friends have been relieved that “someone” hadn’t visited Tae-shik in a when, and I’m guessing that could be Gyeo-re’s father.
Gyeo-re is in desperate have to have of some bonding, and I can not wait for him to grumble his way into this small hospice household. He’s clearly a good match for Group Genie, and I do not feel they’ll let him keep off to the side staring longingly at their household dinners for extended.
